The aim is to test the performance of Mixbus on different hardware and drivers: full Intel, full AMD, nVidia with Intel, etc. The tests are done on Vanilla Ubuntu bases, customised with KXStudio repositories, lowlatency kernel, Pulse Audio Jack plugin. You can find the setup tips on the UbuntuStudioPreparation wiki page. It was not possible to test on Ubuntu Studio in order to save time: the available workstations and laptops where already installed with Ubuntu and generously lent by their owners a few hours. The session used for the test is always the same: 8 tracks (6 mono, 1 stereo), recorded in 48khz, with all eq and comp activated in Mixbus, plus the Harrison Gverb on the master and the SR2B LinuxDPS reverb on the first bus. Tape emulators are enabled where possible. Sound quality is set to 32 bits floating in Mixbus. Jack is launched with a period of 1024, around 42ms of latency at 48khz. CPU is set to performance. It is aimed to be a realistic small mix session. ****************************************** Thinkpad T61P - Intel Core2 Duo CPU T7700 @ 2.40GHz × 2 - nVidia Quadro FX 570M with 512 MB memory, nVidia driver 310, 1920x1200 - 3 GB memory - integrated Intel HD sound card Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bits - Unity: from 34% to 45%, average 40% -> not very stable - Unity 2D: 30%, very stable except when changing from editor to mixer - Gnome Classic with effects: 24% very stable - Gnome Classis without effects: 23% very stable, except when changing from editor to mixer Comment - Harrison is aware of a rendering bug with Cairo and the nVidia driver. It may explain why it is not very stable with desktop effetcs. ****************************************** Custom made workstation - Intel Core2 Duo CPU E4600 @ 2.40GHz × 2 - Intel 545G, 1920x1200 - 2 GB memory - integrated Intel HD sound card Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32 bits - Unity: around 44% - Unity 2D: 39%, very stable - Gnome Classic with effects: 43% very stable - Gnome Classis without effects: 40% very stable Comment - Not very surprising, a full Intel setup is very stable, even if it is an old one. ****************************************** Custom made Workstation - AMD A6 - Integrated HD7000 GPU, Amd Driver 13.01, dual screen 2x1920x1080 - 4Gb memory - RME HDSP 9652 sound card Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bits - Unity: around around 21%, up to 24% - Unity 2D: 20%, very stable - Gnome Classic with effects: 21% very stable - Gnome Classis without effects: 20% very stable Comment - With the default available AMD/ATI restricted driver, wich is older than the HD7000 GPU, there are some bugs with OpenGL display. Example: Harrison essentiels can not be used with their GUI. - Installing the january 2013 release of the AMD driver through x-edgers solve the OpenGL GUI display problems. And running a session with a lot of tracks is more stable in Unity - The best desktop choice with older driver is Gnome Classic. With the 13.01 driver, it is possible to work with Unity.
